What does it cost to store your own data? As with most things, probably more than you think. But it’s an important question, considering that the data spigot is turning into a data fire hose…and possibly a water cannon. Drawing upon responses from nearly 2,300 decision-makers in a 2013 survey, Forrester Research, Inc. found that the average enterprise is managing almost 50 percent more data than it was two years earlier.
By one industry estimate, data production will be 44 times greater in 2020 (just six years from now) than it was in 2009. Individuals will be generating more than 70 percent of it; however, enterprises will be responsible for storing, protecting and managing 80 percent of it.
