The How

In the constantly changing world of information technology (IT), it seems that every day companies are investigating what else they can leverage “as a service.” In general, there are three main categories for “as a service: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). Recently I hosted a “database as a service” (DBaaS) lunch-and-learn at our Cincinnati data center to an audience of IT professionals interested in the latest “as a service” offering from Peak 10.

The audience varied from IT directors to DBA’s. There were even a few consultants in the crowd, but all of them were interested in what leveraging this service could mean for their companies. Some of these companies had deep-talented IT personnel with their own DBA on staff. Others had one or two “IT generalists” tasked with doing it all. It didn’t matter what the size or scope of their projects were. What mattered was that they had to accomplish the goal(s) their businesses had set in front of them.

After the presentation, I spoke to some of the attendees. It dawned on me that they were not there to hear me speak about the benefits and challenges of providing a database as a service product. They were there seeking help ─ help in understanding how this service might benefit their companies, customers and, ultimately, their businesses’ bottom lines.

I began the lunch-and-learn with the purpose of introducing our latest service offering. By the time it was over, I realized my audience was asking a deeper question. That question was not what but how? The daunting task associated with choosing any service provider cannot be answered by visiting a web site or even reading a white paper. It takes proper due diligence, which often starts at the keyboard but very seldom ends there.

In closing, from one professional who lives and breathes “as a service,” I understand the enormity of finding the right fit for your business in the ever-changing landscape we call “IT.” So if you too find yourself asking the question “how,” please keep in mind that you are not alone. Our mission at Peak 10 is to provide industry best solutions that solve our customer’s needs and help answer that question.
