About Wellcentive

Atlanta-based Wellcentive is a pioneer in responsible population health management and data analytics for physicians and their organizations. Thousands of providers and their organizations use Wellcentive solutions to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care for millions of patients nationwide. Clients include many of America’s leading healthcare companies and facilities, who use Wellcentive’s cloud-based Advance Outcomes Manager™ and Data Manager solutions to improve clinical and financial outcomes.

The Challenge

Wellcentive and its Advance Outcomes Manager™ are ideally positioned for the rapid metamorphosis underway in the healthcare industry – changing from fee-for-service payment models to value-based fee structures. Its Advance software measures quality of care, rewarding positive outcomes over prolonged and less effective treatment plans.

Wellcentive relies heavily on outsourcing in order to maintain a lean corporate infrastructure and an unobstructed view of its core opportunities and challenges. The company needed a provider that could take care of IT infrastructure and cloud services, enabling it to remain laser-focused on responsible population health management and its core operational tenets. For them, it was all about speed, agility, flexibility and partnership.

Advance is a complex business intelligence application that derives optimum solutions from big data analytics. Consequently, speed and reliability of the supporting infrastructure are critical. As a healthcare industry player handling vast amounts of patient data, HIPAA compliance, security, and business continuity/disaster recovery were must-haves, as well.

Wellcentive leads the industry in aggregating clinical, financial, and administrative data from multiple systems such as hospitals and physician Electronic Medical Records (EMRs). By aggregating data across these systems, individual providers on disparate systems can act as one large provider group. Some 2,500 interfaces from these health systems, payers, laboratories and vendors, together with 200 million clinical events per month, help patients receive coordinated care across its ecosystem, while also speeding reimbursements and cutting costs for providers.

When its technology and service requirements exceeded the capabilities of its previous IT services provider, Wellcentive sought alternative solution providers that could help lead them forward and stay ahead of their needs.

Peak 10’s Solution

As a start-up, Wellcentive began with Peak 10 on a small scale in 2011 with three cloud application servers and collocated database. As the company has grown rapidly, so has its partnership with Peak 10, which it considers an extension of its organization. “We were growing fast. We needed a partner and wanted someone alongside of us,” said Kirk Elder, Wellcentive chief technology officer.

From the start, communication and close collaboration between the two companies have guided the evolution of Wellcentive’s IT business solution, which now includes more than 80 application servers and collocated databases in Atlanta, the Peak 10 Recovery Cloud for disaster recovery, managed security services and on-site data protection.

This hybrid mix of virtualized and physically co-located servers and network services helps deliver predictive and actionable analytics to its diverse client base. Peak 10’s world class cloud, network, and data center infrastructure seamlessly integrate technologies, resulting in high reliability, high performance, and a high degree of operational efficiency. Wellcentive’s clients send their information via secure protocols (SSL, VPN, etc.) to the application where the business intelligence tools parse and analyze it to facilitate creating predictive care plans for patients.

Peak 10’s commitment to operating HIPAA compliant clouds in secure data center infrastructures distinguished it from other would-be service providers. Wellcentive utilizes Peak 10 managed security services to help it meet regulatory requirements and enforce company security policies. Services also protect against viruses, spam and other issues that can compromise the security and integrity of IT assets.

Wellcentive’s Recovery Cloud site is located and operated in a data center hundreds of miles away. “Peak 10’s adoption tools made its Recovery Cloud implementation fast and easy, more like flipping a switch for replicating data to the back-up site. It’s easier than anything I’ve seen,” said CTO Elder.

Benefits

Most Wellcentive customers are subject to HIPAA/HITECH compliance and, by extension under the obligations of “business associates” of those customers. Peak 10’s cloud infrastructure is architected to help achieve and maintain compliance specifically in regard to the HIPAA Security Rule. Its HIPAA compliant cloud, as well as best-in-class security systems and policies, are features Wellcentive actively markets to its prospective customers.

“Peak 10 is my infrastructure team. Just as we collaborate with our customers to help us achieve their goals, Peak 10 does the same with us,” said Elder. Teams meet three times weekly or as needed, in addition to quarterly business review meetings. This enables Peak 10 to proactively advise Wellcentive on scaling their infrastructure to stay ahead of business growth, while allowing them to focus on making growth happen.

“Over the past three years when we’ve needed to make adjustments and reset our sights, Peak 10 was right there supporting us, working through complex issues, getting creative with technical and financial solutions. That’s a close partnership,” Elder said.
