RALEIGH, N.C. (June 20, 2007) – Peak 10, the leading independent data center operator and managed services provider, hosted and sponsored the first-ever Triangle Game Jam on June 16 and 17 at its Raleigh data center. The event was designed to encourage experimentation and innovation in the game development process.
Participants consisted of senior game developers -- engineers, designers and artists -- from established area gaming companies such as Emergent Game Technologies, 3Dsolve, Red Storm Entertainment, Epic Games and Destineer Studios. Inspired by similar events in Oakland, Calif., Boston, Mass., and Toronto, Canada, the goal of the game jam was to develop as many games as possible given a common theme and technology platform in a two-day timeframe. Games were developed around the theme “Triangle” using Microsoft’s XNA Game Studio Express platform.
“It’s a priority to provide these talented local professionals with opportunities for creative expression in order to further develop our technology community here in the Triangle,” said Greg Rollet, vice president and general manager of Peak 10 Raleigh.
During a brainstorming session, the development team generated 19 game concepts and then voted to decide which games would progress to the prototyping stage. Initial programming took place on eight games, which ranged in genre from shoot ‘em up to puzzle, and at the end of two days, five games emerged as playable and complete.
The five resulting games from the Triangle Game Jam will be on display at Thursday’s International Game Developers Association (Triangle Chapter) meeting at 7:00 p.m. at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. Sponsors for the IGDA meeting are Altruent Systems and GamePal.com.
